We started because Rutherford County's trees are aging out all at once — and too many were being taken down by whoever showed up with a chainsaw, a pickup and no insurance.
Murfreesboro's canopy was planted in two big waves — the maples, hackberries and oaks of the 1940s through the '60s around MTSU and the old East Main district, and the Bradford pears, green ash and red maples of the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions in Blackman, Salem, Barfield and out to Smyrna and La Vergne — and both are failing on schedule now. The pears split, the ash are dead from emerald ash borer, the hackberries are hollowing out. After every tornado warning and every ice night the out-of-state trucks roll in, charge whatever the panic will bear, and leave. In between, a lot of "tree service" in the county is a man with a saw and no workers' comp.
